So I noticed recently when I visited Gizmodo and a few other Gawkerverse sites that there were ad bars on the top, side and bottom of the page from Taboola, I tried blocking them with Adblock but they come right back. Now this morning I noticed them popping up on Jalopnik, am I doing something wrong with my Adblock or they getting smarter? They are unbelievably annoying.

If you really care, open your ad block settings and uncheck “Allow some non-intrusive advertising”. Personally I allow those ads though so the site can get some ad views.

I think they’ve just found a novel way to display them that ad blockers haven’t picked up on yet

Uninstall Adblock, and start running uBlock and No-Script .

Installed uBlock, so far so good.

Thanks!

Taboola pays Ad Block to allow their ads to display. Ad Block requires that the ads just be static content (no animations, etc.) so they are less awful. It’s not an ideal arrangement, but the price the industry pays for going overboard with ads. Except it is going to be worse than that as Chrome is going to start blocking most intrusive ads by default, which will really shake things up.

I tried that when I started noticing the ads coming back... Didn’t change anything for me. Really the annoying bit is just the top banner...the page loads, sits for a second, then everything jumps down when the banner loads.

I was able to get AdBlock to remove them after a few tries at blocking them
